Kapurpurawan Rock Formation: The Powerful Lesson The Waves Taught Me

What if the worst things that happened to you were actually sculpting you into something beautiful? I know how ridiculous that sounds. For years, it felt as though my life was falling apart. I used to think I had chosen the wrong career. My marriage ended, and the plans I once believed in collapsed one by one. Then I stood in front of the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation in Ilocos Norte, a natural wonder that has been beaten by wind and waves for centuries.

Everything that tried to destroy it made it more beautiful.

Maybe I wasn’t breaking at all. Perhaps I was being carved.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

The Kapurpurawan Rock Formation was arguably the highlight of my weekend trip to the Ilocos region. I went to Ilocos expecting to be blown away by Vigan and the otherworldly desert landscapes of Paoay. Little did I know another stop was waiting for me, one that would become the most memorable moment of the entire trip.

But Kapurpurawan wasn’t just a breathtaking sight or a pleasant surprise. It also reminded me of one of the most important life lessons.

Over centuries, relentless wind and crashing waves have shaped its limestone cliffs into forms that feel almost deliberate, as if nature itself were slowly chiseling away at stone.

So what exactly did I learn that day?

And is the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation really as stunning in person as the photos online?

My Kapurpurawan Rock Formation experience

As I’ve mentioned several times on my blog, I hate spoilers.

That’s why when I travel, I don’t do extensive research or plan every detail to make my trip smooth and convenient.

I see travel as a metaphor for life.

You can plan with great detail and prepare extensively, but sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones you never planned for.

When I was planning my Ilocos region weekend, I was only familiar with a few places, including Paoay Sand Dunes and Calle Crisologo.

So, when our guide, Aldrin, told us we were headed to the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, I wasn’t expecting much.

I even thought it was just a quick roadside stop to make the tour more interesting.

On the way to the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

I’m not the kind of person who always questions the guides “what’s next?”

As we made our way to Kapurpurawan, I simply let our guide do what they do best. I didn’t ask what it looked like or what we would be doing there. I didn’t even open my smartphone to scour the internet for Kapurpurawan Rock Formation photos.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, and I really thought it would be just a 10-minute stop.

But as we got closer, I started to notice that the scenery was changing.

Soon, towering windmills appeared on the horizon, reminding me of those iconic Ilocos Norte postcards. For a moment, I thought this was a road from Bangui windmills to the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

I’m no slouch when it comes to geography and directions. But this time, I was completely clueless and had no idea where our van was headed.

Then our van stopped in an area flanked by souvenir shops and vendors.

As we were about to step out of the van, the other joiners began preparing their things and talking about their Kapurpurawan Rock Formation outfit ideas.

That was when I realized Kapurpurawan wasn’t just an ordinary stop.

Going to the rock formations

We followed a narrow pathway that would lead us to the base of the rock formations.

Along the way, I caught glimpses of the rocky coastline, and I could feel the excitement in the air.

Other joiners were adjusting their outfits, while some were talking about the different Kapurpurawan Rock Formation activities.

Activities. Plural. That could only mean there were a bunch of exciting things waiting for us below.

My heart started to beat faster as we got closer.

That’s one of the perks of having a go-with-the-flow attitude.

Unlike the younger version of me, I didn’t Google “what to do in Kapurpurawan Rock Formation” or ask ChatGPT what would happen on my weekend trip.

And truthfully, I’m glad I didn’t.

Because when the path finally opened up, the view caught me completely off guard.

Suddenly, the rugged coastline stretched out before us, and there they were. The limestone cliffs of Kapurpurawan Rock Formation stood proudly along the edge of the sea, their smooth white curves rising above the crashing waves.

Behind them, giant windmills turned slowly in the distance.

It was a picture-perfect view. It looked like something from a dream.

Exploring the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

One of the joiners mentioned that there were quite a few activities at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. He said we could even take a horseback ride to the gorgeous rock formations in the area.

I didn’t know that was even possible.

We, however, decided to do what we do best: explore the area on foot.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Don’t get me wrong. The horseback ride wasn’t expensive, and could be a fun experience for anyone.

But I preferred walking because it gave us flexibility. It allowed us to make quick detours and pause whenever we saw something beautiful.

And so we followed the pathway that led us to a beautiful overlook at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

It wasn’t the first time I had been blown away that day. After all, we had an exhilarating 4×4 ride on the Paoay Sand Dunes earlier.

But it was the first moment that day when I was completely surprised.

I mean, it didn’t look anything like the Philippines.

The Paoay Sand Dunes made me feel like I was the Little Prince lost in the Sahara Desert.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

And the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation made me feel like I had somehow been transported to Taiwan.

In a country famous for its tropical beaches, these landscapes made no sense at all.

Yet they reminded me how astonishingly diverse and beautiful the Philippines can be.

As I stood there, I also realized how wonderful it is to have no plans at all.

When we were young, people always told us to create a long-term plan for our lives.

Study hard, earn a degree, work hard, settle down, and enjoy life when you’re retired.

It always sounded logical.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

But for some reason, I never fully bought into that idea.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve lived my life without strict plans. I never wanted to follow a script that society handed to me.

That doesn’t mean I never worked hard or tried to improve myself. It simply means I never felt the need to map out every step of my life years in advance.

Some people find comfort in knowing exactly where they’re headed.

I’ve always been more comfortable discovering things along the way.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Sometimes that approach confuses people. They ask where I see myself five or ten years from now. They expect a detailed answer, something carefully thought out and neatly organized.

But the truth is, I’ve never been good at predicting the future. And personally, I don’t think life was meant to be predicted.

Life can throw you a curveball along the way, and all your plans can crumble in the blink of an eye.

After a quick detour, we made our way back to the pathway the other joiners had taken on horseback.

It was a bit messy and slippery. It would have been easier if we had taken the horseback ride. Still, I preferred exploring the area this way.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

At least we could pause and admire the scenery whenever we saw something beautiful.

And we did pause several times on our hike to the other rock formations in the area.

From the white limestone cliffs to the gigantic windmills, there was a stunning sight at every turn.

We kept on walking, until we caught up with the other joiners in our group.

And while they were busy snapping photos, my world seemed to stop as I stood there, stunned by the beauty of Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

Words and photos don’t do justice to its beauty.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

I could write in a hundred different ways to describe it and post photos from different angles of this rock formation.

Still, nothing beats the feeling of seeing this natural wonder in person.

With its soothing sea breeze and peaceful setting, it felt like a scene from a Korean or Taiwanese movie.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

No wonder the other joiners were preparing outfits for Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

Every corner of this place felt like a natural photo studio.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Some tourists carefully walked toward the edges of the cliffs, posing against the dramatic backdrop of the sea. Others simply stood there, letting the wind whip through their hair while their friends tried to capture the perfect shot.

I, however, wasn’t in a rush to take photos.

Instead, I took a moment to simply stand there and take it all in.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

The wind blew steadily across the cliffs, carrying the salty scent of the sea. Down below, waves crashed endlessly against the limestone formations, their sound echoing along the coast.

It was peaceful.

It made you forget about deadlines, responsibilities, and the long list of things waiting for you back home.

For a while, I just watched the waves.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Over and over again, they slammed against the rocks below, slowly shaping them with each passing tide.

And suddenly, a thought came to mind.

These rocks didn’t become beautiful because they were protected from the wind and waves.

They became beautiful because they endured them.

For centuries, the forces that should have destroyed these cliffs slowly carved them into something extraordinary.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

I guess life works the same way.

Maybe the things that break our plans, shake our confidence, and force us to start over are the same things that shape who we eventually become.

I thought about my life and how the seemingly endless trials once broke me.

At least, that was what I believed at the time.

But at the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, I began to see things differently.

The wind and the sea had been battering these cliffs for hundreds or maybe thousands of years.

Every wave that slammed into the rock looked violent, almost destructive.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

And yet, those very forces were the reason the formations looked so beautiful today.

I wouldn’t have been the fierce and strong person I was that day if I hadn’t gone through all of it.

I would have stayed the same, with no growth and no reason to look at the world differently.

And many of the things I dreamed about would have remained just dreams.

I might never have become an author. 101 Letters to Juliet might have remained a story trapped inside my head instead of a book that found its way into the world.

Looking back, I realize that almost everything I wanted in life was waiting outside my comfort zone.

And those challenges I once feared were also outside that comfort zone.

They were difficult. Some of them felt overwhelming at the time.

But they didn’t kill me.

They made me stronger.

They pushed me to take risks, to explore, to create, and to see the world in ways I never would have if everything had gone according to plan.

And somehow, all those unexpected turns eventually led me here — standing on the windswept cliffs of Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

Taking pictures of the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

I stood there for a while longer, letting the wind rush past and the sound of the waves fill the silence.

I wasn’t thinking about the past. I wasn’t replaying old mistakes or wondering how things could have turned out differently.

And I wasn’t thinking about what I had lost.

I was thinking about how far I had come.

And that’s the quiet beauty of places like Kapurpurawan.

They remind you that even the roughest forces in life can shape something extraordinary, whether it’s a stretch of limestone along the coast, or the person standing there, watching the sea.

I took a few photos too.

But the truth is, the best part of that visit wasn’t something a camera could capture.

It was that quiet moment on the cliffs, when the wind was strong, the waves were loud, and everything suddenly felt calm.

And as we slowly made our way back, I couldn’t help but smile.

Because sometimes the most memorable places are the ones you never planned to visit.

And sometimes the moments that shape us arrive when we least expect them.
