Curiosity, as they often told me, is a dangerous thing. As the old saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. But what they never mentioned was that safety could be just as deadly. Worse, safety could trap you in a life haunted by regret and what-ifs. And that was why, one hazy Saturday, I took an impulsive trip from Cebu City to the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.

I know. It sounds like the kind of ridiculous decision only a madman would make. With barely any time to prepare and no carefully planned itinerary to follow, I knew this random weekend trip to Mindanao had disaster written all over it.

But this crazy weekend trip turned out to be quite a fascinating surprise. Not only was I mesmerized by the beauty of Sultan Kudarat, but I also discovered many revelations. 

So what happened on my visit to the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge?

There was a time in my life when Mindanao, particularly Davao City, was like my second home. 

I used to fly down south frequently just to escape the usual routine and find some breathing room. 

In the past couple of years, I had unintentionally spent less time in Mindanao, and more time exploring the wonders of Luzon.

But there was always a part of me waiting for an opportunity to return. I missed the raw and untamed emerald landscapes of Mindanao and the warmth of the locals. So when a photo of Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge crossed my feed, I knew it was time to pack a bag.

Arrival in Davao City 

The moment I arrived at Francisco Bangoy International Airport, I was instantly transported into a different time. 

I remember the days when I carried my heavy hiking backpack to climb the country’s most stunning mountains, including Mt Dulang-Dulang and Mt Hamiguitan. 

I spent days of my life navigating the mossy forests of Mt Kitanglad and braving the unpredictable weather on Mt Apo.

This time, my backpack was pretty light. I had no tent or a sleeping bag, and not even a clue if the tour to the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge would actually push through.

All I had was a rough idea of the route and a stubborn refusal to turn back.

Leaving the airport, the familiar Davao heat welcomed me back like an old friend. I booked a Grab to Napsule Suites, where I spent a few hours attempting to sleep while waiting for the meet-up time for our tour.

Restless and a bit excited, I, as usual, didn’t fall asleep.

Earlier, I mentioned that our tour to Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge was still uncertain.

Actually, the tour operator already confirmed that it would push through, even though it didn’t have enough joiners. 

But anything could happen. In today’s rough economy and unpredictable weather, I would not be surprised if someone backed out at the last minute.

And someone did exactly that because of a medical condition. I found out the moment I stepped into the transport van.

To their credit, the organizers still pushed through, even though it wouldn’t be very profitable on their end.

Along the way, the van picked up the rest of the joiners for our tour. In total, there were only six of us for this weekend escape to Sultan Kudarat.

As we drove through the darkness, no one uttered a word. Everyone just closed their eyes, hoping to steal a little sleep before the day tour actually began.

I tried to catch some sleep too. I was completely unsuccessful.

A few hours later, the morning light started creeping through the windows. That was when I saw the rugged, untamed landscapes of Sultan Kudarat unfolding right outside.

The drive to the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge was bumpy and rugged to say the least. With rocky roads and landscapes filled with endless banana trees, it somehow reminded me of the ride going to the jump-off point for Lake Holon.

Besides the rough, rocky stretches, our van even had to cross directly through a creek. Despite the chaotic terrain, the ride felt surprisingly comfortable. The anticipation was building, and everyone inside the van seemed to be in high spirits.

People began preparing their bags and applying sunscreen. Still, no one dared to strike up a conversation. That quiet hesitation is completely normal when you put a bunch of strangers together on an organized tour.

Eventually, we arrived at the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge. I couldn’t wait to step out of the van and finally see the wild landscapes of Sultan Kudarat with my own eyes.

Admiring the beauty of Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge

All I could say was stunning. 

With its dramatic rolling hills and dreamy morning light, the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge was absolutely postcard-worthy.

As I stood there taking in the sheer scale of the landscape, a thought suddenly hit me.

A lot of people might say this impulsive trip to Mindanao was reckless. It was a last-minute decision and it was supposedly bound to fail.

Yet there I was, surrounded by endless emerald hills, grateful that curiosity had won.

Then I realized something very specific about failure and the fear of judgment.

Here’s the thing. 

We aren’t afraid of failure. We, for the most part, are afraid of what people will think of us if we fail. But the thing is, nobody is thinking of us. People are too busy thinking about themselves and the shit they go through every day.

So, if you ever want to do something, do it. Remember, everything in this world is temporary and fleeting. Your youth, your energy, and your time will not wait for you.

And if people ever judge you for doing what makes you happy, set boundaries or cut them off.

I would rather adjust my life to someone’s absence than adjust my boundaries to accommodate their bullshit, drama, and disrespect.

Exploring the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge

While we were admiring the view, our tour coordinator handed out our free breakfast. He suggested we eat first before heading into the rolling hills.

But we had other plans and we wanted to enjoy the moment, especially since the morning light was perfect. 

After hours of sitting in a cramped van, we also wanted to stretch our legs and start exploring.

So, we descended from the parking area and headed for the hills.

Every turn at the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge was stunning. If heaven was on earth, it would look exactly like this.

It looked like a dream, a painting crafted by a world-class artist. In some way, it reminded me of Bohol’s Alicia Panoramic Park and Mt Kulago.

As for the hike, it was fairly easy. I would even say there was no actual hike at the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge at all.

I honestly prefer tough trails that test my physical and mental strength. I crave major climbs that make people question their life choices.

But I don’t mind exploring scenic, effortless rolling hills like this.

Just gazing at its beauty and sheer size is enough to melt my stress and worries away.

And besides, variety is the spice of life. If my adventures were all death-defying and tough, I would eventually get bored too.

We went down further to fully experience the beauty of the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge.

Soon, the sun rose over the eastern horizon, fully revealing the endless emerald waves of the rolling hills.

I paused and enjoyed this rare and priceless moment in a frenzied world.

Once again, a thought came to mind as I admired the view.

This particular moment made me realize something about anxiety.

Anxiety, as I have learned, comes from trying to be in two different places at once. People start to become anxious when they rehearse the future and replay the past.

But when you are standing in the middle of a massive emerald valley, it’s impossible to be anywhere else. The beauty of the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge forces you to drop the heavy luggage of yesterday and the anxious script of tomorrow.

Maybe we should spend more time in the present.

Perhaps the secret to a fulfilling life is to set your anchor completely in the here and now.

And besides, the past can’t be undone, and the future could be a place without you in it.

Moments later, we climbed back up and took turns posing for the drone.

I am usually not a fan of drone videos and photos. But with views as heavenly as this, I just couldn’t resist.

Then we went back to the parking area to finally have our breakfast and grab some refreshments.

We had just capped off our visit to the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge. But the day had just begun, and we still had a couple of places to go, including the Pangadilan Falls and Rock Formation.

On our way to the next stop, everyone inside the van suddenly became talkative. We shared our experiences exploring different places, from Mindanao all the way to Batanes.

There were no formal introductions. On trips like these, I didn’t think they were even needed. Sometimes, you don’t even learn their names until the ride back home when you add them on Facebook.

One of the best things about my so-called reckless and impulsive trips is that I get to meet different people from across the Philippines.

Over the past few years, I have met so many interesting people and unforgettable characters.

And I wouldn’t have met any of them, or experienced any of this, had I just stayed in my comfort zone and stuck to the safer routes.

Curiosity can lead you into uncertainty, but safety can be a seductive trap. Safety tells you to stay put and convinces you that the predictable path is the only path.

But a predictable life is a small life.

When you refuse to take risks, you’re denying yourself the space you need to learn and grow. You’re locking the doors to new connections, new landscapes, and entirely new versions of yourself.

If you want to experience life abundantly, you have to be willing to leave the shore. You have to trade the illusion of security for the raw beauty of the unknown.

Because at the end of the day, the best chapters of your story will never be written inside your comfort zone.

I mainly went to Sultan Kudarat that day just to see the Grand La Palmera Mountain Ridge. Everything after that, I thought, would just be the icing on the cake.

But I was wrong.

The next places we visited were just as beautiful as the mountain ridge.

And it proved that sometimes you have to be a crazy son of a gun to discover something new and beautiful. Curiosity is a risk, for sure, but every now and then, it’s a beautiful one.

You see.

Life isn’t meant to be lived on a rigid, predictable schedule.

When you stop trying to control every single outcome, you’re giving yourself plenty of opportunities to discover something unforgettable. You let the unexpected trip take the wheel, and you allow the world to surprise you.

So pack a light bag, stay curious, book that spontaneous ride, and go to that place people say is too far or too difficult to reach.

The world is massive, and your time here is incredibly short.

Don’t waste it waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect plan. Just go out there, embrace the chaos, and live.
