Hanging Coffins of Sagada: A Hauntingly Beautiful Reminder That Life Won’t Wait
The dead don’t talk. Or at least, that’s what we’ve been told. As I admired the hauntingly beautiful Hanging Coffins of Sagada in Echo Valley, I felt the echoes of their voices, carrying the wisdom of the past.
And that was when the questions came.
What if the dead never truly left?
What if they had learned a different way of talking?
The thing is, even in their dead silence, the dead can teach you more about life than any living politician.
And every burial ground holds stories, lessons, and silent reminders of what really matters most.
Unfortunately, in a world too distracted by noise, we rarely have the patience to listen.

But in Echo Valley, without the chaos of modern life, you could listen and feel their voices at every turn.
So, what did I discover on our visit to the Hanging Coffins of Sagada?
What did the dead teach me on this short but scenic hike?
My experience at the Hanging Coffins of Sagada
I thought we’d miss it.
The guides didn’t even guarantee we’d see the Hanging Coffins that day.
The unexpected detour on our way to Sagada made it uncertain.
But Lady Luck was fortunately on our side.
We had just finished exploring Sumaguing Cave, our legs aching from the climb, our bodies covered in dirt and sweat.
Still, something pulled us forward.
When we arrived at the Echo Valley parking lot, the sun was already starting its descent.

So, we wasted no time and started our hike to the Hanging Coffins, Sagada, Philippines.
Even though it was late, I was confident we’d see the Hanging Coffins in Mountain Province before nightfall.

From the registration area, we followed our guide on a relatively flat pathway in Echo Valley.
Calvary Hill Cemetery
People always think cemeteries are creepy.

I, however, think they are a thing of beauty.
The thing is, I don’t see death in a morbid way.
I don’t think of cemeteries as places meant to house the dead.
Call me strange, but to me, burial grounds aren’t just resting places.
They’re reminders and sacred places that teach the living how to live better.
Every time I walk through a cemetery, I’m reminded of one of my favorite phrases: memento mori (remember you must die).
And that was what the dead whispered to me at the Calvary Hill Cemetery.

The dates inscribed on headstones at the cemetery say an inevitable truth: we all have an expiration date.
No one escapes death, but not everyone lives.
Everyone knows they’re going to die.
But not everyone embraces it.
Most of us live as if we have all the time in the world.
We put off our dreams, delay apologies, and wait for the perfect moment that may never come.
But the dead don’t lie.
They remind us that life is fleeting, that every breath is borrowed time, and that the only certainty we have is now.
As the guide explained the history of the cemetery, I was reminded that life is short and is often shorter than we expect.
Some of the dead left this world with unfinished dreams, unspoken words, and plans that never happened.
Every moment is fleeting, and once it’s gone, you can’t get it back.
We only have one shot at living.
So why waste it on things that don’t matter?
A graveyard sometimes tells stories of what-ifs and of time that ran out too soon.

And speaking of time, we noticed the sun slowly dipping toward the horizon.
We needed to keep moving.
So, we went on with our hike, determined to reach the Hanging Coffins of Sagada before nightfall.
Echo Valley Viewpoint
Following our guide, we kept on walking on the paved trail, until we arrived at the Echo Valley Viewpoint, also called Echo Valley View Deck.

There was a line of tourists waiting to pose at this view deck.
Our guide advised us to wait for the other group to finish since it was late, and it might be our chance to enjoy the view in daylight.
Then, something hit me.
This place wasn’t just called Echo Valley because of the way sound bounced off its cliffs.
To me, it was a metaphor.
Everything we do and every choice we make leaves an echo long after we’re gone.
Some people leave behind legacies, while others fade into silence with their stories lost to time.
And as I stood there, waiting for my turn at the viewpoint, I couldn’t help but wonder.
When my time comes, what kind of echo will I leave behind?
At that moment, I remembered the epitaphs I had read earlier in the cemetery.
They are simple words inscribed in stone, meant to summarize an entire existence.
A few words, yet they carried the weight of a lifetime.
And that’s when the question struck me harder than ever.
What do I want mine to say?
I’ve filled so many roles in this lifetime that some might wonder what my epitaph would be when my time comes.
But there’s only one thing I would like to be remembered: a kind father to my daughter and adopted children.

Then, it was my turn to stand at the view deck.
Afterward, I took pictures of the members of the group and admired Sagada’s emerald mountains and gorgeous houses.
As ma’am Ai and her daughter posed at the view deck, I couldn’t help but wonder if I would have the opportunity with what they were doing.

Would I ever have the opportunity to share a moment like that?
One day, I want to take my daughter on an adventure like this.
I’ll take her to places that teach her that life isn’t just about existing but about truly living.
But right now, she’s still too young for a trip like this.

Maybe I should start small.
Perhaps I should stop waiting for the “right time” and begin with simpler, easier journeys.
Life is fleeting, and if I truly believe that, then I need to act now.

If life has taught me anything, it’s that tomorrow is never promised.
The hike to the Hanging Coffins Of Sagada
With time running out, we didn’t spend a lot of time at Echo Valley View Deck.

So, we followed our guide on the concrete descending stairs where we got a good view of the Hanging Coffins of Sagada.
Along the way, we paused as our guide shared insights about the Hanging Coffins of Sagada

He said there’s one accessible spot where we can view the Hanging Coffins of Sagada.
The others may be accessible, but they don’t allow tourists to go there.
He even pointed to the other hanging coffins that were almost covered with towering trees.
Soon, our hike continued on the concrete stairs leading to the Hanging Coffins of Sagada.
Getting down was easy, but I knew getting back up to the jump-off point would be a huge pain in the ass.
Admiring the Hanging Coffins of Sagada
As we descended further, the air grew quieter.
It was as if Echo Valley demanded silence and quiet respect for the souls resting above.
When we finally arrived at the closest viewing point, I looked up and saw the famed Hanging Coffins of Sagada, suspended high on the limestone cliffs.
That was a surreal moment for me.

I’ve read and seen the Hanging Coffins of Sagada photos for years.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine standing here, staring at them with my own eyes.
I’ve struggled so much in life that I once believed I’d never have the chance to travel and see places like the Hanging Coffins of Sagada with my own eyes.
When life finally gave me the chance, I took it.
Because if there’s one thing the dead have taught me, it’s this: life doesn’t wait.
It never has, and it never will.
And when it’s over, all that remains are the echoes of the choices we made or the regrets of the chances we never took.

The Hanging Coffins of Sagada were also a sight that commanded reflection.
Unlike conventional cemeteries where the dead are buried beneath our feet, here, they remain above, reminding us of something greater than ourselves.
While others took pictures, another thought crossed my mind.

Unlike traditional cemeteries, the Hanging Coffins of Sagada have no grand inscriptions or elaborate epitaphs.
There are no mentions of wealth and titles of status.
And that made me realize that in the end, we are all equal.

Death is the great equalizer.
It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, powerful or powerless.
It doesn’t matter if you are a CEO, a politician, or a not-so-wealthy Filipino with a regular 8-to-5 day job.
Death swallows kings and beggars just the same.
Your job titles, bank accounts, or social media followers won’t be on your tombstone.
And all the money in the world can’t buy you extra time.
The richest people in the world have the best doctors, the finest food, and the most luxurious lifestyles.
But no amount of money can buy a single second more when death knocks at the door.
Learning more about the Hanging Coffins of Sagada
There’s more to travel than its mesmerizing sights.
Every time I travel, I learn things that I wouldn’t have discovered had I stayed at home.

It piques my curiosity and satisfies my hunger for new learning.
Through our guide, I found out the reason the Hanging Coffins of Sagada exist.
I thought these coffins were hung on cliffs for spiritual purposes only.
Little did I know, there was a practical reason they did it.
As our guide told us, these coffins were hung to prevent dogs and other animals from devouring the corpses.
Before the start of the tour, our guide also told us to remain silent throughout the hike.
There was a reason for that.

After sharing details about the Hanging Coffins of Sagada, he gave us the reason why it was important to be silent throughout the tour.
What did he tell us?
Well, I won’t share spoilers on this story.

The hike back up
As mentioned earlier, getting up back through the concrete would be a back-breaker and a pain in the ass.
I couldn’t imagine how the early people of Sagada carried their loved ones up these steel slopes and treacherous cliffs to bury their departed loved ones.
It must have been physically and emotionally grueling.

Still, they did it not just for tradition, but for love, honor, and something greater than themselves.
The Hanging Coffins of Sagada are more than just a one-of-a-kind burial practice.
They are testaments to the resilience of people who chose to honor their dead most extraordinarily.
Every coffin hanging is a story of strength, sacrifice, and a culture refusing to let their traditions fade into dust.
Many people overcome immense pain and struggles, and their lives inspire us long after they’re gone.
Like these coffins, their courage and sacrifices do not simply disappear.
They hang in history, reminding future generations of what it means to endure, to honor, and to live with purpose.
The setting sky at the cemetery
They say a cemetery holds millions of unspoken apologies and unsent letters.
They were words meant to be spoken but forever lost to time.
And unfortunately, I have my own.

Approaching the cemetery, memories of my late father suddenly crossed my mind.
I never got the chance to patch things up with my father before he died.
I always thought we had more time.
So, I let our pride stand in the way.
I told myself that some things don’t need to be said and time heals all wounds.
But time is merciless.
It takes and never gives back.

So, say what needs to be said before it’s too late.
Don’t let pride rob you of peace.
A cemetery is filled with untold stories, unspoken apologies, and dreams that never saw the light of day.
The dead remind us to express our feelings, tell people we love them, and not assume we always have more time.
The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary the Virgin
With the tour coming to an end, we decided to make one last stop in Echo Valley: The Episcopal Church of Saint Mary the Virgin.
Snapping pictures of the church, I saw the smiles and heard the giggles of the people on our Hanging Coffins of Sagada tour.

And in a strange poetic way, it summarized everything I learned on our Hanging Coffins of Sagada tour.
The truth is, I almost didn’t join this trip.
I told myself that I’d do it when the timing was perfect, when work was less busy, and when life felt more convenient.
But the coffins and joy I felt in my friends made me realize the perfect time is always now.
After all, life doesn’t wait.
I thought about my father, the regrets, and unspoken words.
I thought about the coffins, the echoes of those who came before us. And then I thought about my daughter and myself in this moment, alive.
And then, it all clicked.

I had spent too much time waiting and hesitating.
But life waits for no one.
It never has.
So enjoy and laugh because life is fleeting.
Travel to live fully, without regrets and fear.
And don’t wait for the perfect moment because it may never come.
In life, it’s not about how much time we have, but how we use it.
And on this day, I chose to live.
